Questions, answered

Body fat, explained.

How does this body fat calculator work?
It uses the US Navy circumference method: a few tape measurements (neck, waist, and hips for women) plus your height. It is free, needs only a tape measure, and lands within a few percentage points for most people.
How accurate is the Navy body fat method?
For average builds it is typically within about 3 to 4 percent of a DEXA scan. Very lean or very heavy bodies see larger errors. What matters most is consistency: measure the same way each time and watch the trend.
Where exactly do I measure?
Measure your neck just below the larynx, your waist at the navel for men or the narrowest point for women, and your hips at the widest point (women only). Stand relaxed, do not suck in, and measure against bare skin.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men, roughly 10 to 20 percent is fit and 6 to 13 percent is athletic. For women, roughly 18 to 28 percent is fit and 14 to 20 percent is athletic. Essential fat sits near 3 to 5 percent for men and 10 to 13 percent for women.
Can I estimate body fat from photos instead?
Yes. HyperBody's AI physique rater estimates your body fat from 5 photos with no tape measure needed, and adds muscle-by-muscle development scores on top.
