What does each body fat
percentage look like?

The same body from 4% to 40%. Slide through the levels and see what actually changes: definition, waist, chest, face fullness. Then find out where you are.

Average range

Flat but soft stomach with no visible definition. Healthy and normal; the muscle is there, just under a layer.

AI-generated reference images: the same virtual body rendered at each level. Real bodies vary with genetics, muscle mass, fat distribution and hydration, so treat the images as honest references, not promises.

Why it looks different on you

Same percentage, different body.

Body fat percentage is a number; how it looks is a distribution. Men store fat centrally (belly first, limbs last), women store it peripherally (hips and thighs first), and age shifts both toward the middle. Muscle mass changes the picture again: 20% on a trained body looks tighter than 20% on an untrained one, because the same layer sits over more shape.

That is why a visual reference can only take you so far. Two people at the same percentage can look two categories apart, and the mirror is a famously biased instrument. If you want the number for YOUR body, a photo-based reading beats matching yourself to any chart.

How to use the body fat visualizer

Pick a sex, then move the slider to compare body fat levels on the same body.

  1. 1

    Pick a sex

Fat sits differently on male and female bodies, so start with the one that matches you.

  2. 2

    Slide through the levels

Each step shows the same body at a different body fat percentage, with a category label and what is visible at that level.

  3. 3

    Find your own number

When you have a visual match, confirm it: the photo analysis reads YOUR body instead of a reference image.

Questions, answered

Body fat levels, explained.

What body fat percentage is healthy?
For men, roughly 10 to 20 percent is a healthy sustainable band, with athletes often at 8 to 14. For women, roughly 18 to 28 percent, with athletes often at 16 to 22. Essential fat, the minimum the body needs to function, is about 3 to 5 percent for men and 10 to 13 percent for women. Health risks rise progressively above roughly 25 percent for men and 32 percent for women.
Why does the female ladder start at 12% and not 4%?
Because a woman at 4 percent body fat cannot exist. Female essential fat is about 10 to 13 percent; below that the body shuts down critical functions. Depicting it would be dishonest, so our female ladder starts at 12 percent and labels it as the extreme it is.
How accurate are these images?
They are AI-generated renders of the same virtual body at each level, built to match how each percentage typically presents. They are honest references, but real bodies vary with genetics, muscle mass, fat distribution and hydration, so your own look at any percentage will differ in the details.
How do I find my actual body fat percentage?
Matching yourself to reference images gets you within a few points, and a tape-measure method like the Navy formula gets similar accuracy. For a reading based on your actual body, HyperBody's photo analysis estimates your body fat range from five photos, along with a muscle-by-muscle assessment, and you can start it without an account.
How fast can I move one level down?
One step on this ladder is about 4 percentage points. At a sustainable fat-loss rate, expect roughly 8 to 16 weeks per step depending on your starting point, training and consistency. The higher your starting level, the faster the early steps come.
